Ruth M. Rasmussen, age 90, of Austin, died Saturday, July 18, 2015 at Sacred Heart Care Center. Ruth was born December 4, 1924 near Rose Creek, Minnesota to Alfred and Anna (Rossow) Ruland. After graduating from high school she attended Minneapolis Business College. On her 20th birthday she enlisted in the SPARS, U.S. Coast Guard. She took her training in Manhatten Beach, Brooklyn, NY and then served at the Separation Center in New Orleans. On October 4, 1947 she married Norman Rasmussen. That same year Ruth began 30 years of employment with Local P9 in “the Unionist” office. In 1977 she was named editor of “the Unionist” until her retirement in 1982. Ruth was involved with many organizations including: The United Way, American Legion SPAM Post, Mower County Coalition, she was Zonta Woman of the Year in 1982, BPW Woman of the Year in 1985, League of Women Voters, Christian Ed Center Board, Toastmasters, Art and Travel Club, Mental Health Advisory Board, Salvation Army Board, Housing and Redevelopment Authority, Blandin Program, Austin City Council, Austin Utility Board, DFL County Convention, Planning Commission, Red Cross Bloodmobile, Hospital Auxiliary, Hospice Program, First United Methodist Church Boards, and City of Austin Airport, Light and Water Committees. Ruth was Pat Piper’s campaign chair for 18 years, she went on the 2012 Honor Flight to Washington D.C., and she was a member of the Prader-Willi Syndrome Association. Survivors include two daughters, Marilyn (Duane) Sucha, Kathryn Rasmussen; bonus daughter, Sally Crowley Anderson; seven grandchildren; five great grandchildren; sister, Carmen Benson. She is prededed in death by her husband, Norman; parents, Alfred and Anna; sister, Helen. A Memorial Service will be held 11:00 am on Wednesday, July 22, 2015 at the First United Methodist Church with Rev. Dennis Tamke officiating. Friends may call one hour before the service at the church on Wednesday. Interment will be in Oakwood Cemetery with military rites by American Legion Post #91 and V.F.W. Post #1216.
