Richard Allen Schumacher, age 85 of Austin, Minnesota, passed away Tuesday, March 19, 2019 at St. Mark’s Living in Austin. Richard was born on March 12, 1934 in Austin, Minnesota, the son of Lawrence and Mathilda (Kerling) Schumacher. He grew up in Austin and attended St. Columbus Catholic School, graduating in 1952. Following high school, on August 19, 1952, Richard enlisted into the United States Air Force serving 4 years in active duty, and 6 years as a reservist. He was honorably discharged on August 18, 1956. On November 3, 1956, Richard was united in marriage to Ruth Stroh in Bonner, Montana. After their marriage they made their home in Helena, Montana, there Richard worked in the court house. The couple then moved to Missoula, and there he graded lumber. In the 1960’s, Richard and Ruth took up residence in Minneapolis, where he worked for a casting company. Later they moved to Austin, where Richard worked at the veteran’s service office and finished his career at Hormel. Richard served on St. Mary’s church board, calling him the “candy man” at St. Mary’s every Sunday, he provided the kids candy and rolls for the adults. He was a life member of the V.F.W. Post 1216, American Legion Post 91, and the DAV, he served as V.F.W. commander. Richard “loved” the lottery and enjoyed baseball, he played semi-pro in his younger years. He will be dearly missed by all who knew him.
Richard is survived by his children, Mark (Dianne) Schumacher of Savage, MN, Calvin (Amy) Schumacher of Elko New Market, MN, Karl (Allamay) Schumacher of Savage, MN, Christina (Michael) Kanne of Austin, MN, Edward Schumacher of San Antonio, TX, Margaret (Bruce) Grover of Austin, MN, Melissa (Paul) Jacoby of St. James, MN; special friend, Vera Armburst of Austin, MN; 13 grandchildren; one great-grandchild and one on the way; brothers, Roland (Barb) Schumacher of Austin, MN, Ralph (Kathy) Schumacher of Rosemount, MN, Robert (Donna) Schumacher of Farmington, MN; sister, Delores Norring of Shakopee, MN. He was preceded in death by his parents, Lawrence and Mathilda Schumacher; wife, Ruth Schumacher in 2007; and brother-in-law, Norm Norring.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, March 30, 2019 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church, Newry Township, Minnesota, with Father Thomas Niehaus officiating. Visitation will be held from 4:00-7:00 p.m. on Friday, March 29, at Worlein Funeral Home in Austin with a rosary service to follow at 7:00 p.m. Visitation will continue for one hour prior to the service on Saturday at the church. Interment will be in St. Mary’s Catholic Cemetery, Newry Township. Memorials can be directed to St. Mary’s Catholic Cemetery. Services are prearranged and performed with Worlein Funeral Home of Austin.
