Opoka James Nathanael, age 27, of Austin, Minnesota, passed away on Saturday, February 15, 2025. Opoka was born on June 26, 1997, in Juba, South Sudan to parents, Obote James Nathanael and Kiro Nyigwo. In 2005, the family moved to Kansas City, Missouri and in 2009 they moved to Austin, Minnesota. In 2016, he graduated from Austin High School. He was a member of Our Savior’s Lutheran Church in Austin. Opoka loved deeply and was loved by many; his selfless heart was what drew people to him. Known for his many traits, he will forever be remembered by those who grew up with him as a fun and kind soul. He enjoyed spending time with his friends and family. He was always playing with and caring for the kids around him, a loving uncle to many. Opoka had many interests, including music, putting things together, riding BMX bikes, fixing bikes, and cooking for people, to name just a few. His name, kind heart, and soul will live on through the many lives he touched.
Opoka is survived by his father, Obote James Nathanael of Louisville, Kentucky; mother, Kiro Nyigwo of Austin; stepfather, Omot Aganga of Austin; siblings, Olal Nathanael of Austin, Layiet Nathanael of Austin, Amunyo Nathanael of Austin, and Akeena Nathanael of Austin; cousins, Ariet Omot, Arate Omot, Bongire Omot, Angach Ajaang, Ajulu Omot, Bungar Omot, Achan and Opiew Aben, and many other cousins; he is also deeply mourned by countless aunties, uncles, other relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by his aunt, Abang Nyigwo; uncle, Nyagare Gilo; and cousin, Gumdel Gilo.
Funeral services for Opoka will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, March 8, 2025, at Our Savior’s Lutheran Church in Austin. A visitation will be held for two hours prior to the service on Saturday at the church. Interment will be in Oakwood Cemetery in Austin. Worlein-Hoff Funeral Homes of Austin are assisting the family with arrangements.
