Melvin Bernard King, 87, of Austin, Minnesota, died Saturday, July 6, 2013 at Adams Health Care Center. He was born March 6, 1926 in Riceville, Iowa to George and Eva (Johnson) King. On March 20, 1944 he married Maxine Spellman and they had two sons. Melvin proudly served his country during WWII in the U.S. Army from 1944 to 1946. After the war he worked as a laborer for Hormel Foods until 1984. Melvin was an avid fisherman with his neighbor Jack and they spent many hours catching Catfish and Northern Pike. Later, he spent time fishing on Cannon Lake with Brad and Nancy and grandson Patrick. He also enjoyed deer hunting along with Brad and Patrick at his sister's farm in Harmony, Minnesota. In his later years he and Brad fished at the channel in Albert Lea, where they caught more Walleyes than they ever did. Melvin spent many hours sitting in his recliner in his garage preparing fishing poles for his next outing. He was a collector of glassware, guns, fishing reels and rods and he enjoyed flea markets and gun shows. Melvin was preceded in death by his parents, wife, brother Marrold, sisters: Vesta Bergland, Wilma Bell, Marcella Murphy, Irene Weber and Roberta Jenson. He is survived by Gary (Shirley) King, Bradley (Nancy) King, 3 grandchildren and 2 great-granddaughters.
