Melvin Herbert Callies, age 77, of Austin, Minnesota died Tuesday, March 8, 2016 at his home. Mel was born August 13, 1938 in Duluth, Minnesota to Barbara (Zacher) and Herbert Callies. He graduated from Duluth Denfeld High School in 1956. Mel was a veteran of the United States Marine Corps and a graduate of the University of Minnesota Duluth. On June 1, 1963, he married Judy Erickson. They moved to Austin, Minnesota in 1970 where Melvin taught in the Austin Public School System for 27 years. Mel enjoyed coaching hockey and girls’ softball during many of those years. Survivors include his wife, Judy; son, Peter (Laurie); daughter, Cathy Miller (Greg); two grandchildren, Marcus and Megan Miller, who he loved dearly; brother, Herb Callies; sister, Barbara Wicklund; brother, Steve Young (Lauren); as well as a niece and two nephews. Mel is preceded in death by his parents and stepfather. A Memorial Mass will be celebrated 11 am on Saturday, April 30, 2016 at St. Edward’s Catholic Church with Father Jim Steffes officiating. Friends may call from 9:30 am until the time of the service at the church on Saturday. Military rites will be by American Legion Post #91 and V.F.W. Post #1216. Memorials are preferred to the Gift of Life Transplant House or donor’s choice. Arrangements by Mayer Funeral Home. Condolences may be left at www.mayerfh.com
