Marjorie Kinney

Marjorie Mae Kinney, age 97, of Austin, died Wednesday, January 20, 2016 at Mayo Clinic Health System-Austin after a brief illness. Marjorie was born July 14, 1918 to Leo and Viola (Selix) Regner in Austin and lived her entire life there. She had various jobs which included working at Kresges at the sock counter and later in the hardware area which she really enjoyed. Marjorie worked at the Hormel office before she married John Kinney on May 15, 1939. They met on a double date each with a different date. Marjorie and John honeymooned in New York City (the 1939 World’s Fair). Marjorie would go and visit John in San Francisco while he was in the United States Navy during World War II. They enjoyed going “up North” with family, to the “cabin” with her sister’s family by Ramsey Dam, to Stacyville to visit John’s family, to the Terp, and they also had “Supper Club” with friends who took turns having meals at each other’s homes or sometimes after church at Todd Park. Marge had a special bond with her sister, Beryl McEnaney and Beryl’s husband, Earl. They were very close and were always together on holidays, special occasions, and trips or just any old time. They shared their whole lives together. In August of 1964, John died in a car accident while in Seattle for his daughter’s wedding. Marge never remarried. She was a homemaker and cook who made great desserts and Christmas cookies. There were always cookies, pies, or cakes at her house. Marge was a member of St. Augustine Catholic Church and walked there on Sundays. She also helped at funeral dinners and had unit meetings. She volunteered at Sacred Heart Care Center where she played cards and games. Marge helped with the “cart” which sold items to the residents. Marge loved nature, walking, and music which included everything from Frank Sinatra to the Rolling Stones, and reading-especially autobiographies. She also enjoyed doing dishes, raking, gardening, country drives, and vacations-often to Washington to visit her daughter’s family where they always went to the ocean which she loved. Survivors include her daughters, Diana Kinney, Austin, MN, Nan Kinney (Christie Cassidy), Santa Fe, NM, Judy (Tom) Shiflet, Lakewood, WA; grandchildren, Nick Shiflet and Sara Shiflet, both of Seattle, WA; a great granddaughter, Claire; nieces and nephews. In addition to her husband, she is preceded in death by her parents; her sister and brother-in-law, Beryl and Earl McEnaney. Be kind to someone in memory of Marjorie. A Memorial Mass will be celebrated 11 am on Friday, March 11, 2016, at St. Augustine Catholic Church with Father Jim Steffes officiating. There will be a 5 pm CCW rosary on Thursday at Mayer Funeral Home where friends may call from 5-7 pm. Interment will be in Calvary Cemetery. Arrangements by Mayer Funeral Home.
