Funeral services for Marilyn Hackensmith will be held Friday December 23rd at 11:00 AM at First United Methodist Church in Austin. The Reverend Dennis Tamke will officiate. Visitation will be from 10:00 – 11:00 AM at the church on the day of the service. Mrs. Hackensmith, 88, of Austin, died Monday December 19, 2016 at Sacred Heart Care Center, where she resided. Burial will be at Grandview Cemetery in Austin. Marilyn Mae Balfe was born June 19, 1928 in Austin, the daughter of Matthew and Viola Balfe. A lifelong resident of Austin, she was a graduate of Austin High School. She married Everett Hackensmith on March 7, 1948 at Grace Lutheran Church in Austin, and the couple enjoyed 50 years of marriage together. Marilyn cherished living in the country and raising her children there. She loved her flower gardening, and she took great pride in canning her own vegetables and jams, and making a good home for her family. Her hobbies included sewing, knitting, reading, golfing, bowling, and she especially looked forward to dancing on Saturday nights with Everett. She is survived by her children, Craig (Joanne) Hackensmith of Gilbert, Arizona, Debra (Gary) Cottrell of North Branch, Minnesota, Steven (Julie) Hackensmith of Austin, Scott (Shawn) Hackensmith of Sauk Rapids, Minnesota, and Everett (Brenda) Hackensmith of Austin; eight grandchildren; one great-grandchild, and another is due in March. Also surviving is a sister, Karen (Steven) Sorenson of Hayward, Minnesota. She was preceded in death by her husband in 1998; two sisters, Rochelle Petersen and Pat Benson; and a brother, Marshall Anderson.
