Lorraine Holzer Schneberger, age 95, of Austin, died September 1, 2018 in her home surrounded by her family. She was born in Winneshiek County, Iowa on September 14, 1922 to Martha Holien Holzer and William Holzer. She grew up in Ossian, Iowa, graduating from high school in 1939 at age 16. In 1942, Lorraine moved to Washington D.C. to become part of the war effort. She worked in various secretarial capacities between 1942 and 1945 at the newly constructed Pentagon. Lorraine married William Henry Schneberger Jr on November 30, 1946 at Queen of Angels Catholic Church. Together, they had five children. She was employed at the Hormel Institute in Austin, where she worked as a secretary as well as in the labs, rat room, and ran the stock room. She retired at 65, but continued working at the Institute part time until the age of 79. Lorraine loved going on trips, music, plays, art, and gambling. She was an avid reader, and her love of words was passed down to her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. Lorraine was a devoted mother and grandmother, and much of her time was spent with her grandchildren. She attended countless school functions, and many weekend breakfasts were spent making skinny pancakes, which were her specialty. Often this was done while holding a baby in her arms. Lorraine had a good sense of humor, to which we attribute her long life. Her wit was quick and could throw out a great one liner at a moment’s notice. Holding a cinnamon roll in her hand, she said “Is there anything better than a cinnamon roll?” paused, and said “two cinnamon rolls.” Lorraine lived with her daughter, Lori and son-in-law, John for the last two years of her life. She quickly won the loyalty of the family dogs, and each one chose a specific job to do with her. She is survived by her children, Steven (Becky) Schneberger, Cloquet, Susan Sheridan, Northfield, Sharon “Sheri” (Steven) Runtsch, and Lori (John) McDermott; 11 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; and sisters, Norma Jean Derr, Austin, and Audrey Mara, Prairie Du Chien, Wisconsin. She was preceded in death by her parents, William and Martha Holzer; her husband, William Schneberger Jr.; and infant daughter, Angela Marie Schneberger. A Funeral Mass will be celebrated at noon on Friday, September 7, 2018 at Queen of Angels Catholic Church with Father John Traufler officiating. Friends may call at Mayer Funeral home one hour before the service on Friday. Interment will be in Calvary Cemetery.
