Joann Smith

Joann Beverly (Perkins) Smith, age 83, formerly of Austin, died Wednesday, February 17, 2016 at Madonna Towers in Rochester. Joann was born July 13, 1932 in Mapleview, Minnesota to Carrol and Florence (Hamsness) Perkins. She graduated from high school. On November 30, 1950 she was united in marriage to Richard Arthur Smith at Queen of Angels Catholic Church in Austin. Joann resided in the Austin area for most of her life. Joann was a loving wife and mother and a St. Edward’s Parish volunteer. She worked in the Hormel office before having her children, was involved in scouts, St. Edward’s choir, and card club, was treasurer of the Philomathian, worked on the St. Edward’s Hospitality crew, loved flower gardening, was the Queen of Hearts at Madonna Towers, loved her family and dear friends, and was very proud of her grandchildren and great grandchildren. Survivors include eight children, Thomas Smith (Mary), Silver Bay, MN, Patricia Smith Lastine (Wesley), Mason City, IA, Rebecca Smith Krulish (Greg), Lyle, MN, Kelly Smith (Silvia), St. Peter, MN, Margaret Smith Machacek (Steven), Dexter, MN, Peter Smith (Janna), Rochester, MN, Jeffrey Smith (Jerene), Mendota, MN, Jerome Smith (Sarah), Burnsville, MN; 20 grandchildren; 22 great grandchildren; several nieces and nephews; great nieces and nephews. She is preceded in death by her husband, Richard Smith; parents, Carrol and Florence Perkins; two sisters, Ladonna Perkins Miller and Shirley Perkins Trepanier. A Memorial Mass will be celebrated 1:00 pm on Sunday, February 21, 2016 at St. Edward’s Catholic Church with Father Don Schmitz and Deacon John Kluczny officiating. Friends may call one hour before the service at the church on Sunday. Interment will be in Calvary Cemetery. Arrangements by Mayer Funeral Home. Condolences may be left online at www.mayerfh.com
