James D. Whalen, age 89, of Austin, died Tuesday, September 23, 2014 at Mayo Clinic Health System in Austin. He was born October 10, 1924 in Detroit, Michigan to Hubert and Thelma (Mitchell) Whalen. Survivors include a son, Mike (Teresa) Whalen, Salem, OR; two daughters, Jean Cain, Chatfield, MN, Cyd Petersen, Austin, MN; nine grandchildren, Justin Cain, Matt Cain, Giles Cain, Kellie Jonasson, Brian Petersen, Jessica Petersen, Tracy Burnick, Jason Whalen, Jamie Whalen; 13 great grandchildren; a brother, Hugh (Chris) Whalen, Austin, MN. He is preceded in death by his parents; wife, Bonnie; son, James Whalen Jr. At Jim’s request, cremation has taken place and no formal services will be held.
