Frank A. Karnes, 71, of Austin, passed away in his home, surrounded by his wife and children, on Saturday, May 3, 2014 after a long battle with cancer. He was born on June 14, 1942 in Omaha, Nebraska to John Sr. and Violet (Iverson) Karnes. Frank grew up in Austin, graduating from Austin High School in 1960. He enlisted in the United States Army from 1960-63 where he was stationed in Germany. On April 24, 1965, Frank married Bonnie S. Rosenthal at Queen of Angel’s Catholic Church in Austin. Frank spent the majority of his life working for Almco of Albert Lea and then Quality Pork Products and Hormel Foods. Growing up, he loved to spend summers on his grandparent’s farm in Preston, which led to many fond memories he shared with his family. However, his happiest times were being outdoors hunting and fishing with his boys and grandsons. He also loved to play cards and spend time with his family. Frank is survived by his wife Bonnie Karnes of Austin; children, Susan Forsman of Howard Lake, Frank Karnes Jr. of Austin, Debra (Joe) Kirsch of Glenville, Michael (Shelly) Karnes of Austin, Matthew (Trisha) Karnes of Austin, Jessica (Nathan) Wilhelmi of Austin; sister, Clarice Gasner of Medford; brother, John Karnes Jr.; grandchildren, Nathan Helland, Amber Helland, Paige Forsman, Gabrielle Bauer, Jacob Kirsch, Thomas Kirsch, Christian Karnes, Courtney Karnes, Collin Karnes, Chloe Karnes, Isaac VanRavenhorst, Madison VanRavenhorst, Hannah VanRavenhorst, Ryan Wilhelmi; great-grandson Hendrix Schreppel. Frank is preceded in death by his parents, grandparents, son Christopher, grandson Andrew, sister Joanne and brother Ronald Sr. Visitation will be 4-7 pm on Wednesday, May 7, 2014 at Mayer Funeral Home in Austin. A Funeral Mass will be at 11:00 am on Thursday, May 8, 2014 at Queen of Angel’s Catholic Church. Visitation will start at 10:00 am until the time of the service. Burial will follow at Calvary Cemetery with Military Graveside Rites performed by the American Legion Post #91 of Austin.
