Dr. James Robert Burke

Dr. James Burke of Austin, Minnesota, passed away peacefully in Lakeville, MN, on July 28, 2024, at the age of 69. James was born on September 4, 1954, in West St. Paul and graduated from Henry Sibley High School in 1972. He went on to complete a bachelor's degree in biochemistry from the University of Minnesota in 1976 and earned a doctorate from the University of Minnesota School of Medicine in 1980. Dr. Burke was a dedicated physician known for his exceptional care and empathy. His patients at Austin Medical Center (now Mayo Clinic Health System) often requested him by name, testament to the trust and compassion he brought to his practice. He retired from MCHS in 2020, after 40 years of service in Family Medicine and Gastroenterology.

Outside of medicine, Dr. Burke cherished an active lifestyle. He found joy in cycling, downhill skiing, and spending quality time with his family. His love for outdoor adventures was matched only by his devotion to his Christian faith, which guided his life and enriched his relationships.

Dr. Burke was preceded in death by his parents, Russell and Cleo Burke, and is survived by his sister, Kathy Lewis, brother, David Burke, the mother of his children, Kathryn Dyas, his four children, Evan Burke, Ilsa (Brendan) Otto, Livja (Nathaniel) Johnson, Marta (Paul) Little, and beloved grandchild, William Bear Otto, who brought him so much pride and joy. His legacy of kindness, dedication, and faith will be cherished by his family, friends, colleagues, and the community he served. 

A memorial service to celebrate Dr. James Burke's life will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, August 17, 2024, at Worlein-Hoff Funeral Home, 1801 4th St. NW, Austin, MN. The visitation will be from 5:00-7:00 p.m. on Friday, August 16, at Worlein-Hoff Funeral Home in Austin. Visitation will continue an hour prior to the time of service on Saturday. Worlein-Hoff Funeral Homes are assisting the family with arrangements.
