David J. “Lefty” Perl, age 85, of Austin, passed away Wednesday, January 8, 2020 at his home. David was born November 11, 1934 in Austin to Norman and Mildred (Peterson) Perl. He attended Queen of Angels School and graduated from St. Augustine High School (Pacelli) in 1952. He attended St. John’s University in Collegeville and graduated in 1956 with a degree in Business Administration. David was involved in sports from an early age and continued playing baseball for many years. He was a very good pitcher. David played in high school, for the American Legion, the Austin Blues teams, and also played in Cold Spring, Minnesota. In college he lettered all four years and in the mid 1950’s he played in the Minnesota State Amateur Baseball Tournament and was chosen for the MVP award. After college, David entered the United States Army and served from 1956 through 1958. He received an honorable discharge at that time. David worked at the George A. Hormel Company in the billing department for some years before accepting a job with Kroblin Trucking in Waterloo, Iowa. He did Accounting work for them for several years. After leaving Kroblin Trucking, he worked many places in Iowa and Nebraska. When he returned to Austin, he worked awhile for Scheid Plumbing. David had many interests including following most sports, music, reading, doing yard work, and in recent years spent many hours doing Sudoku. He really enjoyed getting around on his scooter and in the summer would spend the evening driving it around East Side Lake. Survivors include his siblings, Carol Krause, Normal, IL, Mary Jane Johnson, Austin, MN, Michael (Ann) Perl, Manhattan, KS; many nieces, nephews, and cousins; his best friend and college roommate, Don Carlson, Rochester, MN. David is preceded in death by his parents, Norman and Mildred Perl; brothers, Stephen and Jon Perl; grandparents; several aunts and uncles. Memorial services are pending.
