Alice Sathre

d. October 27, 2011

Alice Elizabeth Sathre, age 87, of Austin, passed away on Thursday, October 27, 2011 due to complications of dementia. Alice was born in Balaton, Minnesota on July 30, 1924 to Irish immigrants, Patrick and Lizzie (Kane) Crilly. She graduated from Tyler High School and eventually made her way to Austin, where on May 17, 1947, she married her best friend and the love of her life, Paul Sathre. Alice volunteered countless hours in many capacities at Queen of Angels Church and School. She also found satisfaction in her associations with Sacred Heart Hospice Auxiliary, Meals on Wheels, and the VFW charitable gambling committee. After raising her six children, Alice entered the workplace at the Austin Clinic, she continued on at the Hormel Corporate Office and R & D, IB Industries, and Amy Swain's Audiology office. She enjoyed playing bridge, dancing, various crafts, and supporting whatever adventure Paul conjured up. Being involved in her children and grandchildren's lives and activities brought Alice countless hours of joy. We fondly remember our Mom/Grandma as having the "never take the easy way out" attitude, always there for all of us with her "big girl pants pulled up", head down, sleeves rolled up, and boots on the ground-ready to take on whatever curveballs life threw at her-from the blood curdling cries six kids can make, from the many painful earaches of her first born baby to the Parkinsons disease that ravaged Dad and consumed Mom's tireless energy, and all those in between. We children were blessed to have she and Dad by our sides as we have traversed life's paths; the joys and sorrows that we experienced, they experienced with us. We feel our Mom/Grandma is most remembered and cherished as being truly devoted; devoted first and foremost to her husband; her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren; to her mother, brothers, sister; her volunteer opportunities; her friends and neighbors and importantly her Catholic faith, from which she gathered strength and guiding principles. We feel truly blessed to have had our Irish Mom/Grandma with her beautifully dimpled smile as a selfless role model whose legacy of love and devotion we can always look to for inspiration and guidance in our lives. Survivors include her six children, Michael (Lorelee) Sathre, Inver Grove Heights, Paulette (Don) Schlichter, Apple Valley, Danny (Janeen) Sathre, Jacksonville, OR, Charlotte (Dan) Knutson, Bloomington, Scott (Jana) Sathre, Allendale, MI, Christine (Kevin) Schwab, St. Louis, MO; 11 grandchildren, Treana (Andrew) Mungovan, Dane Sathre, Corey (Sheana) Schlichter, Tracey Schlichter, Kanette Sathre, Yvonne (Beau) Garrett, Katie Knutson, Kyle Knutson, Joshua Sathre, Elizabeth (Jake) Snellink, Emily Schwab; two great grandchildren, Kieran and Nora Mungovan; brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law; several nieces and nephews. She is preceded in death by her husband, Paul in 2008; their daughter, Priscilla; grandsons, Christopher Sathre and Matthew Knutson; her four brothers and one sister. A Funeral Mass will be celebrated 11:00 am on Monday, October 31, 2011 at Queen of Angels Catholic Church with Father Dale Tupper officiating. There will be a 2 pm CCW rosary and a 4:30 pm wake service on Sunday at Mayer Funeral Home where friends may call from 2-5 pm and also one hour before the service at the church on Monday. Interment will be in Calvary Cemetery. The casket bearers will be Alice's grandchildren. Memorials are preferred to Queen of Angels Catholic Church.
