Obituary

Gloria J. Jacobson, a proud Norwegian of Austin, Minnesota died Saturday, September 16, 2017, at St. Mark’s Lutheran Home.  She was 93.  Gloria Janet Simonson was born June 5, 1924 at the family home near Sargeant, Minnesota, to George and Ragnhild (Nesheim) Simonson.  She grew up in the Sargeant area with three sisters and two brothers.  Gloria attended country school and graduated from Hayfield High School.  She held jobs in both Rochester and Austin, where she worked for Hormel Foods Corporation.  While working at Hormel, she enjoyed going dancing on Friday and Saturday nights with her girlfriends.  At one of those dances, Gloria met her future husband, Stanley Jacobson, who had recently been discharged from the Army.  On April 7, 1946, Gloria and Stanley were united in marriage at Evanger Lutheran Church, where she was also baptized and confirmed.  The couple made their home in Austin, and then moved to Blooming Prairie for 11 years before moving back to Austin.  They had been members of St. Olaf Lutheran Church since 1958.  Gloria loved being a wife and mother to their 4 children.  She maintained an organized weekly schedule, with a laundry day, ironing day, cleaning day, and everyone’s favorite – her baking day.  Some of the grandkids even called her ‘Cookie Grandma’.  She seemed to know everyone’s favorite thing to eat, so all of her family would get spoiled at times.  The Jacobsons had a large garden and Gloria did a lot of canning and freezing of their crops.  Her canned peach sauce was high on many peoples’ list of favorites.  Each summer, the Jacobson family would head up north with their boat for a week of fishing.  After they sold the boat, Gloria and Stanley would still go fishing at local lakes, sitting on lawn chairs at the water’s edge.  They tried to get to as many lutefisk dinners as possible each fall.  One year they attended six.  Of course, each one was the best.  During their later years together, the couple would have their Friday afternoon date.  They packed a few snacks and two bottles of water and went off for a ride.  They drove around on country roads checking things out, ending up back in Austin just time to go out to eat and still be home before dark.  After Stanley passed away, Gloria lived at the Courtyard Apartments and made many friends there.  In later years, she spent many good times with her lifelong friend, Leslie Jensen.  Gloria will be dearly missed by her friends and family.

Survivors include her children Gary (Paulette) Jacobson of Austin, Susanne (Donald) Lerum, also of Austin, Carol (DeWayne) Lorenze of Dakota City, Nebraska, and Steven (Kathy) Jacobson of Tower, Minnesota; 9 grandchildren Karrie (Gary) Maier, Stacy (Dan) Stork, Casey Vietor, Shelby (Travis) Gilster, Corey Lerum, Jessica Jacobson, Katie (Al) Backlund, Kjell (Emily) Jacobson, and Kelsey Jacobson; 17 great-grandchildren, 2 great-great-grandchildren; former daughter-in-law and dear friend, Pam Brandeland Jacobson; sister Alice Williams, brothers Jacob and Milward (Donna) Simonson; nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.  Gloria was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Stanley, sisters Esther Wiese and Ruby Klingfus, brothers-in-law Arnold Wiese, Donald Williams, LaVern Klingfus, Lawrence Jacobson, Chester Jacobson; sisters-in-law Lavonne Simonson, Agnes Jacobson, and Myrtle Jacobson.

Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. on Sunday, September 24, 2017 at St. Olaf Lutheran Church in Austin with Pastor Mark Niethammer officiating. There will be a visitation from 4:00-7:00 p.m. on Saturday, September 23 at Worlein Funeral Home in Austin, and one hour prior to the service at the church on Sunday.  Interment will be in Red Oak Grove Lutheran Cemetery.  Services prearranged and performed by Worlein Funeral Home of Austin.
